Marriage
and Family Therapists are also trained as psychotherapists to
do individual counseling.
My areas of expertise in psychotherapy include the
treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression,
anxiety, and eating disorders.
Many individuals do not realize they are suffering from
depression or anxiety until their life feels out of control
and they reach out for help. Isolation only increases depression and anxiety whereas
seeking support can decrease it greatly.
As part of psychotherapy, if a client and myself decide
it may be beneficial, some family or marriage therapy sessions
are also completed to help a client to heal from depression or
anxiety. Most of
my clients come to understand that their symptoms are often
the cause of relationship and family problems, so sometimes
family sessions can be very useful.
I
completed my Ph.D. internship at a Rape Crisis Center in San
Antonio, Texas, where I gained the experience to help people
with PTSD, depression, anxiety, grief, and eating disorders.
Since completing my Ph.D. in 2001, I have been in
private practice gaining more experience in helping both men
and women to heal. The
good news is symptoms of PTSD, depression, and anxiety are
very treatable, and often they come from family and life
stresses and/or traumatic events. Marriage
and family therapists are trained not to look at you as
someone with a disorder.
Instead, as a family therapist, I recognize that most
Americans go through anxiety, depression, grief at some time
in their life due to stress, family or work conflict, life
changes, and/or loss.
I look at what’s going on in your life, and I help
you to make necessary improvements to get better.
With
my client’s permission, I sometimes use EMDR (Eye Movement
Desensitization and Reprocessing) to reduce symptoms of
anxiety and depression. For
more information on the treatment of EMDR, go to www.emdr.com.
In
addition to five years of training in marriage and family
therapy to achieve both a Master’s Degree and a Ph.D. (See
my biography HERE),

in being able to assist client’s with resolving grief,
trauma, stress, and anxiety.
